Year 1

Welcome to Bear Class!

Year 1 is taught by Mrs Palmer (Monday–Thursday) and Mrs Colman (Friday). Miss Smith supports Bear Class every day.

Year 1 is an exciting year! We understand that the transition from EYFS to Year 1 is a big step for children, and the Year 1 team aims to make the move from Rabbit Class as smooth as possible. Year 1 is the first year in which children are taught following the National Curriculum.

Phonics is a big part of life in Year 1. Children continue to build on their knowledge from EYFS through daily whole-class phonics lessons, following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. In addition to daily phonics lessons, the children also take part in small-group reading practice sessions three times a week.

At the end of Year 1, the children will take a phonics screening check. The check is carried out with each child individually and is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics.

Bear Class is a happy, friendly place to be, and our main goal is to ensure that all children enjoy their experiences and education in Year 1.

Our PE days are Monday and Friday, so please send your child to school in their PE kit (a plain red T-shirt with black shorts or jogging bottoms and suitable shoes).
