A magical World Book Day
At Hallam Fields Primary School, we marked World Book Day with a full programme of activities that celebrated reading and imagination across the whole school. The day opened with a morning assembly that set the tone for a celebration of books and the joy of reading. Classes then followed a timetable of themed tasks which included a choice of live online events with authors and illustrators. Teachers tailored these sessions to suit the interests of their pupils which helped create a lively and varied day.
In the afternoon, each class took part in a book‑themed art activity. Projects ranged from drawings inspired by class stories to creative bookmarks and character artwork. The activities gave pupils the chance to express their ideas in colourful and imaginative ways.
Literary excitement continued the following day, as we were visited by acclaimed children’s author Kirsty Applebaum.
She led engaging assemblies for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 where she talked about her childhood and her journey as a writer. She read from Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest for the younger pupils and spoke about her novels TrooFriend, The Middler and The Strange Disappearance of Imogen Good with the older pupils. Kirsty also explained her story‑writing process and invited pupils to help build a fun group story.
Workshops for Years 2 and 6 followed and many children were delighted to have their books signed.
The visit brought extra excitement to an already inspiring week and helped encourage a love of reading throughout the school.
